Donohue explains that even over the past three years, in the three seasons, my conversations have been vastly different from the way they were prior to when the league's launch. As Warriors Assistant General Manager Kirk Lacob recently told me Esports is "absolutely growing".
Donohue outlines the benefits of having a league run out of the NBA office, in terms of bringing partners into. "The benefit of being the NBA 2K brand is that we have incredible relations with many of these partners, this allows us to assist them to guide them through eSports and assist them with understanding how to make use of eSports as a means to increase the visibility of their brands."
Another benefit companies that who participate in the NBA 2K League has, is that it is familiar. "While Esports can be a challenge to consumers, at times it's an extremely enjoyable game that it's not necessary to be a participant to watch us play and if you're an expert in basketball you'll get it," Donohue highlights.
Advertising in the sport itself is also established. Donohue states that it's normal to view a basketball game using courtside the game's signage. This allows players to "be an integral part" of the game's virtual reality.
