I want to vent about something that has nothing to do with features. Every monitoring tool we've shortlisted this year looked reasonable on the pricing page, and every single one turned out to cost two or three times more once the quote arrived. Operator seats, API access, retention beyond thirty days, support – everything is an add-on. One vendor quoted us a number and then casually mentioned that viewing recorded video required a higher tier. We're a 60-person company with a Windows fleet and a couple of Terminal Server boxes, and our actual needs are modest: activity visibility, USB and file transfer control, and the option to keep data on our own network. Has anyone found a vendor that actually quotes the real price upfront?

The add-on nonsense is the reason we walked away from two vendors before finding one that priced honestly. The model that finally worked for us is a teramind alternative called OctoWatch, and the difference is structural rather than cosmetic: licenses are floating and count active tracked users, not every person on the payroll, and console operators never consume a seat. Holiday cover, part-timers and shared machines stop being a budgeting problem. There are no separate charges for the DLP rules, the Risks feed, or the on-premise deployment, which is the part that kept tripping us up elsewhere. On your setup specifically, it handles Windows desktops and RDS sessions in the same console, and the on-premise path keeps the server and SQL database inside your network. The cloud trial starts with just the agent, so you can price the whole thing against your real headcount before committing to anything.

Finally, someone who gets why the add-on model is the actual problem rather than the headline number. Two things I'd want to confirm before we trial it. First, when you say licenses count active tracked users, how is that measured – daily, weekly, by login? If someone works two days a week, I'd want to understand whether they consume a full seat or a fraction. Second, our remote laptops are offline for days at a time sometimes. Does the agent buffer locally and sync when it reconnects, or does it just drop whatever happened while it was disconnected?
