What is Ashtanga ?
Ashtanga means "eight-limbed" (asta-eight, anga-limb) in Sanskrit. The eight-limbed route of Ashtanga Yoga leads to the state of Yoga, or Samadhi.
The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, an ancient literature on the theory and practice of yoga believed to have been authored in approximately 200 CE by Sage Pataűjali, contain the definition of Ashtanga yoga.
The 196 sutras, or brief philosophical pronouncements on the philosophy and practice of yoga, that make up Patañjali's Yoga Sutras are arranged into four volumes, or padas. Because the Yoga Sutras are so brief, they are nearly impossible to understand without explanation. Veda Vyasa's commentary, referred to as the Yoga Bhasya, is the most authoritative.
