Why should you stop buying from Amazon? The internet giant arrived in Spain in 2011, growing at an annual rate of 25%, with a 24-hour sales record of 570,000 products and its fastest order was delivered in 16 minutes. But what is the price of delivering the products so fast?

Electronic commerce in Spain exceeded 30 billion euros in 2017, 25.7% more than the previous year. CNMC

A few months ago we did a survey and many of you expressed concern about the ecological footprint of electronic commerce. So when we launched with the Esturirafi EcoTienda we gave this topic a lot of thought . Very fast shipping? Are there sustainable shipping companies? Which is the best option?

WHY YOU SHOULD STOP SHOPPING ON AMAZON

Ultra-fast e-commerce is very unfriendly to the environment. Every time we buy a product and it reaches us in 24 hours, we are contributing to the emission of greenhouse gases, the generation of waste, the evasion of taxes and many times to unfair working conditions.

One of the main problems of buying in electronic stores such as Amazon is the existence of flat rates (Amazon Prime), with this type of rates you have free shipping throughout the year, something that contributes to compulsive shopping. "Do I like this pair of socks? I buy!" ( Click here to Read our post "Consumption vs Consumerism" ).

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF BUYING A PRODUCT AND RECEIVING IT IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS?

  1. More greenhouse gas emissions. The compulsive purchase of products added to the speed of shipping often means that delivery trucks go half load. Taking into account that most of these means of transport are not energy efficient (most are diesel or gasoline) they will have to make many more trips with the consequent emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
  2. More waste. When we don't have to pay shipping costs and the packages arrive so fast we become lazy, we buy unnecessary things and that means that only one thing can come in a box full of plastic bubbles.
  3. Bad work conditions. In Spain, workers at Amazon's San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) center have been on strike to claim their own collective agreement.
  4. Taxes. By buying on Amazon we also contribute to its complicated network to avoid paying taxes. In the US, for example, it did not pay tribute in 2017. Something similar happens in Spain.
